I don't know why it can be such a struggle to fit the arts in each week. No time for that when we are learning to read and write and count!!! BUT - each time the paints are pulled out, or the pastels and "special" paper, we need to remember...this is so important! It is so fun!
The arts bring something unique to each homeschool! I NEVER have to convince my children to come and paint...much unlike the "timer" method used for most other subjects, haha! So...as a result...there is peace...and joy!
Adding in the arts each day doesn't need to be complicated... even small ways like charades during family circle time or making "fancy" cards for a friend's birthday are some ways to add an element of creativity to your day. But I do encourage you to plan some time to follow an art lesson at least once a month. It is always worth it!
Over the years, I have tried a number of Homeschool Art programs and we have enjoyed them all. I often tend to come back to the website Art Projects for Kids for ideas. She offers many free ideas as well as some lessons that you can pay for.

Our first year homeschooling, I tried Atelier Art - it is a DVD-based curriculum and we really enjoyed it. We used Level 1 and completed the program in one school year. There were 18 lessons and were easy to follow. While it is expensive, if you break down the cost by the number of children you'd have using it, it works out to be about $3 per person for a "pro" to virtually come to your house to teach a lesson.
Home Art Studio is one that we had lots of fun with and you can also borrow these from the Anchor Library (send me an email if you'd like to try them!). It is also a DVD-based curriculum with approximately 15 lessons. Each year there is a different theme. It is so nice to just have to look up my supply list, pop in the DVD and we are set! Awesome!
One of our Anchor families has used See the Light Shine Art Class and has been really enjoying it. Each lesson runs approximately 15 minutes and includes suggestions for follow-up drawing activities. Art History is another feature of ART CLASS. Your children will become acquainted with the famous masterpieces of many artists. Biblical truth is integrated into every lesson! Some of the art projects I have seen have been really well done!
Another favourite for every day easy art is: Art Hub for Kids There are many topics to choose from, but here I've attached a favourite of ours...how to draw an emoji! | |
I pray that you will find joy as you get creative with your children...growing together! What a blessing it is to be given these special gifts in the arts to enjoy and may it be an important part of your homeschool!
