Writing is often a struggle in many homeschools. You may need to take a bit of a run at it before you buckle down to tackle a writing assignment... Warm up with a few spelling tests and journal pages...make lists, write letters! Because, to be honest, making it through a writing assignment, from first thought to final product, can be...difficult.
One of my children loves to write, and has a number of stories and songs on the go. The other ones are always asking the question, "How many sentences?" How can you incorporate more meaningful (and enjoyable!) writing into your homeschooling week? Here are some ideas...

Letters.
Time to stock up on stamps and envelopes. The joy factor doubles when we are writing to family and friends. And there is nothing more thrilling than a walk to the post box.
Lapbooks
My children really enjoy making these, and I encourage you to print off some templates or try one for your next novel study or unit.
There are many ways to go about these... You can cut poster boards in half, and tri-fold them so there ae two flaps, and lots of surfaces for, well, lap booking. For a much much better description and resources, check these out (click on the picture to get to the website).
There are so many resources that use lapbooking as a method to share learning, if you would like suggestions on a certain topic, let me know!

Stories Everyone can be a writer! "Library Mouse" by Daniel Kirk is a great story that inspires writing stories of all kinds. Sam (the mouse) loves books so much, he just has to try writing a few of his own. The only thing to do after reading this story is staple together a bunch of little books, and start your own library. Check this book out from your local library, or take a watch as it is read aloud in this YouTube link! |
Have you had a chance to try digital story telling? This free site lets you write, illustrate and publish. This might be a fun way to walk through the writing process, starting with a paper draft, and then creating our own e-books.

There are, of course, so many ways to encourage writing.
Poems, science reports, book reviews, jokes, songs...
As we connect with people, communicate our ideas and tell our stories, we reflect something of the creativity of God! So, tomorrow, I encourage you to give it a go!
